Have you ever regretted selling an item? I do.

by seacoast_ashley 10. March 2015 02:56

I can remember various furniture items that have been a part of and then left my house without much fanfare. Very few of the things that I have sold had any sentimental value at all. Three pieces of furniture are the exception...they float through my memory on a whim and instantly make me feel deep down remorse.

Long lost item number one: a dresser that my Mom had given me. This dresser had been mine since I was 3 years old. It was ugly, dog-bitten, crooked, and crayoned. I sold it. To this day I wish that I had kept that ugly old thing. If Pinterest had been a website at the time I may have covered it in chalk paint or turned it into my daughter’s dress-up area. Who knows?

Ghost furniture item number two (and possible the saddest one): my Mother’s childhood vanity set from the 1950’s. My Mother still has no idea that it is gone (sorry Mom). I had no idea that it was her childhood piece! I found out after a massive yard sale when she said, “Just as long as you didn’t sell that vanity. That would break my heart.” It was a perfect little mid-century modern design that would fit flawlessly into the decor of my home now. Mom thinks the vanity set is in my attic. I search Craigslist for that vanity at least one time a week.

My last and most recent furniture sell regret is an antique iron bed that my grandfather spent hours welding and repairing for me when I was a little girl. That bed served me from the time it was painstakingly restored until the 6th year of my marriage. It weighed 1000 pounds. I loved the bed, but as space got tighter and the bed’s condition deteriorated I had to either fix it or sell it. While scrolling through the pages of a Coastal Living magazine I found my bed. 100% positively my bed. I immediately texted my husband a pic of the bed with a crying emoji.

By giving up these pieces of my history I allowed for space to add new memory makers. I will grieve them always. But at least now I know what I’m looking for when I furniture shop!

Have you ever sold, lost, or given away something that you later regretted? Did you replace it or just move on? Where did you find the replacements?
